The administrative, financial and other matters of

Indian Council of Forestry Research & Education, Dehradun
Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) has been created to formulate, organize,
direct, and manage forestry research; transfer the technologies developed to the states and other
user agencies; and impart forestry education.
Objectives of the Council
- To undertake, aid, promote and coordinate forestry education, research and its application
- To develop and maintain a National Library and Information Centre for forestry and allied
sciences
- To act as a clearing-house for research and general information relating to forests and
wildlife
- To develop forestry extensions programmes and propagate the same through mass media,
audio-visual aids and extension machinery
- To provide consultancy services in the field of forestry research, education and training
and in allied sciences and
- To do other things considered necessary to attain the above objectives
The council has 8 Research Institutes and 4 Research Centres located in different bio-geographical regions of the country to cater to the forestry research needs of the nation. These regional research institutes are located at Dehradun, Coimbatore, Bangalore, Jabalpur, Jorhat, Jodhpur, Shimla and Ranchi and the centres are at Allahabad, Chhindwara, Hyderabad and Aizawl.

Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal
The Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal was established with the main objectives of imparting training and undertaking research to build up the capacity of the government agencies, civil societies and other stakeholders for effective management of the natural resources in the country. Indian Institute of Forest Management to be among the leading international institutions in the area of forest, environment and development management and, be respected, both nationally as well as internationally, for its outstanding contributions in the fields of education, training, research, consultancy and thought leadership.
IIFM has been entrusted with the following three important roles:
- As a leader in the field of Forestry, Environment and Natural Resource Management Education
be concerned with pushing the frontiers of knowledge for development of the sector.
- As a prime mover of knowledge in its field, interpret and adjust world's knowledge to the
Indian context, experiment and create an indigenous body of knowledge.
- As an Apex Institute, to provide effectively trained teachers to other educational institutions
in the field with which it is concerned.

Indian Plywood Industries Research and Training Institute (IPIRTI), Bangalore
IPIRTI was established for undertaking research and development of technologies for plywood and
other panel products.
The mandate of the institute includes:
- Research on all aspects of production of sawn timber, manufacturing plywood and other allied engineered and reconstituted wood and lignocellulosic products, including improvement of materials, manufacturing processes, machines and appliances, conditions of work standard of factories.
- Training in connection with forest product utilization for plywood
industry and trade and allied industries. Imparting technical education
and/or training at undergraduate, postgraduate, and/or any other level
in technology of agro and forests products, adhesives and laminates,
and/or synthetic finishing, manufacturing machinery.
- Testing and evaluation of all forest products viz. plywood, wood,
timber, hardboard, particleboard, chipboard, furniture, glue-lam,
compreg, doors, panel doors, block board, flush doors, veneered panels,
veneers, laminated panels, composite boards, and the products of allied
trade and industry. Formulation of national standard, their up gradation
for all above mentioned products.
- Extension includes transfer of technology for commercialization,
information dissemination through research / technical reports, quarterly
newsletter, participation in exhibition, seminars, conferences, workshop,
and Scientists visit to the industry to assist in process and product
development.

Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehradun
The Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehradun was established in 1987 after reorganisation of forestry research and training institutions in the country. The primary task of the IGNFA is to impart professional initial in-service training to the IFS Probationers,
Mandatory Mid - Career Training(MCT) and orientation courses to the IFS officers
promoted from the State Forest Services. The Academy also organises promotion
linked courses for the IFS officers of various seniorities and one week
refresher courses sponsored by the Ministry. In addition, workshops and seminars
are also organized on emerging issues in forestry sector.

Directorate of Forest Education, Dehradun
Directorate of Forest Education is responsible for imparting initial in-service training to the SFS officers and Forest Rangers sponsored by the State Governments and UT Administrations. The Range officers and SFS officers are trained at Burnihat, Kurseong, Coimbatore and Dehradun. Besides this, Directorate also organises induction-training courses for the RFOs promoted to SFS and various short-term refresher courses for the SFS officers, Range Forest Officers, Deputy Range Officers, Foresters and forest Guards.
